White Dove Release by Martin Ranch - Shingle Springs, CA |

The White Dove, also known as the Rock Dove, is from the order Columbiformes, which includes doves and pigeons. Scientifically, there is no distinction between doves and pigeons, and the names are often used interchangeably. For the most part, "dove" is used to describe the smaller bird, and "pigeon", the larger. The smaller bird has no "homing" instinct, and cannot be trained to return to its loft once released. Therefore it would not be humane to release the "true dove" since it would not survive. Thus, the larger Homing Pigeon with its strong instinct to return to its loft is trained for releases and races.
Our pigeons are members of the International White Dove Society, the National American Racing Pigeon Union, the local Hangtown Racing Pigeon Club, the Shingle Springers 4H Club, and most importantly our Martin Ranch pets. This team has been up to 300 miles from home and returned safelty. They have their own loft and are spoiled greatly!
Our Birds are very important to us. They will not be released in bad weather such as heavy rain, snow, fog or strong winds as they cannot navigate safely. If such weather does happen, your deposit will be returned.
