Had the most delicious hazelnut & chocolate slice from The French Gourmet! They offer a wise selection of baked treats at affordable, everyday prices. I tried two different items and both were absolutely delicious. The flavors don't overwhelm you, it isn't overly sweet, just the perfect amount of each ingredient to make such tasty treats! This is definitely my go to dessert stop whenever I'm in SD.

I drove out of my way twice last month to treat my out of town guests with some of their awesome bakery items! I think they are superior to anywhere else in San Diego area! One of my guests was from England and loved the croissants. The atmosphere is quite pleasant, and when you walk in you can feel you're in a special place unlike any other. There's a sense of fellowship and commitment to quality in both the food and the atmosphere

I love pastry, just about any kind, and i love lemon. I stopped by this place, sure that it must be awesome, I ordered slices of chocolate mousse and lemon pie. The chocolate mousse was tolerable. The pie never met a lemon before in it's life. It was truly the worst, science taste ever. The bread is good though. If you want a french bakery, there's one in Vista where nothing disappoints. Everything they bake will float you above air, especially the chocolate mousse, and you will return for more.

I was really looking forward to having some delicious French pastries. However the only thing French about this place is the name. I had the raspberry chocolate mousse cake. It was dry, dense and cloy (overly sweet with no balance of flavor). I then tried their carrot cake but it tasted chalky, hard and flavorless with the same sickening sweetness.

The interesting thing is they charge nine dollars for you to have one of these in the dining room where it's about four dollars less if you eat it outside or get it to go. Overall, it's so hard to find really good pastry chefs that have the touch. It's not about just throwing a bunch of sugar at it. there has to be notes to a dessert. This is more of a sweet shop. It's not traditional French such St Honore bakery in Portland for example.

Wonderful restaurant, a real gem on Tourquise street, pacific beach. Fantastic food, a great wine selection with very reasonable prices. An absolute must if you love French pastries. Don't miss out on the dining al fresco.

Simply put, The French Gourmet is the best! We worked with them for our wedding reception. From our initial inquiry to the day of our event they were kind, attentive, responsive, professional and wonderful to work with. They worked with us to create a menu that we loved and identify the type of service that best suited us. They did a formal walk through before the wedding to ensure all details were accounted for.

The night of our wedding they were incredible. The entire staff was so professional, quick and kind to everyone at the event. They helped create a romantic and elegant environment through their food presentation and service. The food was absolutely delicious. Numerous guests made it a point to comment on how good the food was. They also worked very well with the many vendors that were part of our event. Weddings are so personal and special, The French Gourmet helped make our day memorable and wonderful! I would refer them to any person looking for delicious food and wonderful service, and give them my highest recommendation.

Went to the French Gourmet to celebrate my friend's birthday! Our food was absolutely delicious! The onion soup was incredible! The dressing on the salad and my egg croissant were prepared amazingly and served beautifully! Tony our server went above and beyond to help us and even sang Happy Birthday to us! Can't wait to visit them again!

This place is a little slice of France! The pastries in here are amazing some of the best I've ever had and I've had my share definitely have to stop by and try this place out. Parking may be limited but patience pays off

What a hidden gem this is. Went there for dinner and had a great time. Mark our server was incredible. Very knowledgeable about what was being served there. As for the food, I'm not even sure saying how great it was is good enough. I've been to other French restaurants here in San Diego but French Gourmet blew them away. The serving were just right. I can't wait to go back and try something else. If you haven't been here try it. If you have go back.

We were driving around nearby and saw this great mural wall painting and notice it was called The French Gourmet. We than search up on Yelp and look at the reviews. After revieing the review, we decided give it a try. We were seated right away outside right next to the giant mural. It was a great spot except it was windy that blew the umbrella that was attached to the low fences. Feels like it is going to yank it up.

While look thru the menu it was pretty simple one side is the lunch and the other is the dinner. It is a simple 2 course lunch meal for $25 per person. You get to choose Appetizer or Dessert and an Entree. Below is what we ordered for our meal: - Onion Soup Gratinee - It was good, just right not too salty. - Avocado Toast - great light Avocado Toast with salad. - Steak Pomes Frites - steak wasn't even cooked only burn outside with totally raw inside.

I try to chew it to break it down but failed. I asked Waiter to reheat the steak to make it cook more. Fries other the other hand good. - Creme Brulee - Good with enough of egg and vanilla flavor. - Raspberry Bagatelle - it was pretty good and interesting about the sweet/sour taste and its texture. Overall service deserves a 4.5 but the food only at around 3.5. Place is definitely romantic and nicely setup.

We went for San Diego Restaurant Week 2022. We always like to come back to this cozy little place. We always love their food and great service. On this time there was a fixed price menu due to the SDRW, but with their best dishes, so it is a good deal to try it. They also have a bakery so you can buy your favorite desserts to take home. We always come back and we usually do on special occasions, since we know we'll have a great experience.

Ordered a cute Easter bunny cake, pickup was easy and convenient. The cake was filled with chocolate mousse, with cream and white chocolate bits that gave a nice contrast to the richness of the mousse.

In a word, Equestte. Absolutely perfect everything and they even have a bakery too. I was lucky enough to get Tony as my waiter, (very attentive) however the other staff appeared just as engaged. The Mushroom/Swiss quiche was moist and melts in your mouth literally. The escargot was spot on (served outside of the shell) the French onion soup, was also very good served with warm bread and soft butter (just the way I like it).

Also let's not 4get the light and airy Creme Brule to finish off the Lunch, with gratuity ($82 even). So there you have it, please take a moment or two to peruse the (small selection) of their wonderful bakery. Will certainly return. CERTAINTY! btw. The only thing bad is parking.

We heard good things about The French Gourmet and decided to have a Restaurant Week lunch on Saturday. Glad we tried it, but it was a mixed experience. The restaurant was very busy at noon -- they were swamped. We waited for our patio table (with a reservation) and then waited over 20 minutes once seated for our order to be taken. Once we got going, our server was great.

The restaurant serves a California-influenced French cuisine. The highlight of the meal was the Escargot la Bourguignon, which we both ordered. This dish was six luscious escargot broiled in garlic butter served with excellent French bread. Our Entrees were a different story: * Steak with Mixed Green Salad was nice. The Flatiron Steak was grilled rare (as requested), but it had a strip of gristle in this steak that made it difficult to cut or enjoy.

The salad and dressing were very good. * Steamed Black Mussels Pommes Frite was a disaster. The pommes frite (French fries) were delivered late and cold -- no seasoning whatsoever. The dozen mussels themselves were very good, but the preparation was awful. Rather than the advertised creamy wine sauce with leeks and garlic, the mussels were in a cheese sauce that tasted like it was made from a powder mix. The chorizo overpowered the mussels. The bread from their bakery was great.

For context, I ate here for restaurant week, so my experience could be skewed. I arrived around 8PM on Friday with a reservation and every table was full. Parking can be a bit difficult as the restaurant itself doesn't have a parking lot and overall, the food was solid with very generous portions. It looked like more than half the time, the food was served by the chef himself, which was a rather fun interaction.

I will caveat that the service was a bit slow (though the place was packed to be fair!), so be prepared to sit down and relax here. Highlights: - Steamed Black Mussels: The chorizo with the white wine sauce with the crostini was heavenly. It was so good, we requested more bread just to clean out the bowl. - Seared Flat-Iron Steak: Steak was cooked incredibly tender, but the bearnaise sauce served with it was perfection and was the best bite of the night. - Oven Roasted Half Duck: The duck was awesome with the crispy skin on the outside and succulent on the inside. Plus, the serving size for this dish in particular was huge! Skip these: - Raspberry Bagatelle: I think because the restaurant was attached to a bakery, I came in with sky high expectations for their dessert and I did think most of them were mediocre. The raspberry bagatelle was served with a super strong raspberry sauce that almost tasted artificial and ended up just tasting like cough syrup.

Came here for restaurant week and everything was fabulous! Very nice staff and delicious food. The inside is cozy and they have a beautiful outdoor seating area between their building and the next one. They are one of the few places left that serves you bread and butter with the meal! They also serve the buttrer warmed so its easy for spreading! My absolute favorite thing was the steamed mussels.

They give you a generous portion. The creamy white wine sauce it was served in could've been a stand alone dish. The escargot was really soft and buttery. My friend enjoyed her cheesy French onion soup ad well. The duck was perfect cooked and the skin well glazed. Now in truth I'd give The French Gourmet 4.5 stars but only because the cakes were a little dry for my liking.

It might be because they pre-slice them for their dessert counter. When you walk in to the dessert counter side your senses are overwhelmed with sweet smells and two front fridges of pastries and desserts. After dinner I ended up getting more goodies for my roommates. I got the raspberry bomb (sponge cake on bottom sweet raspberry cream on top covered with hardened chocolate), a blueberry danish, and a cheese danish.

Both danishes were drool worthy and something I'll just have to come back for. They had so many sweet treats and bakery items, I'll have to come back. They also do seasonal treats which is nice if you're looking for something to bring for the upcoming holiday! Last thing - they have a fridge on the side for more "to go" lunch items like sandwiches and salads. If you're in the neighborhood, definitely stop by!

We purchased pastries from the bakery and also ate in the restaurant. The pastries were delicious with the exception of the macrons. They were too sweet and weren't nearly as good as you would get in Paris. We bought 10 and didn't eat all of them - and we love macrons. The restaurant was a lovely experience. The staff were relaxed and friendly, totally giving a sense of "settle in and enjoy yourself".

The beet/pear salad (which was new to the menu) was a huge hit. I can't tell you the last time I had a salad that I raved about. We had the carpaccio as an appetizer, which was quite nice. My husband had the flatiron steak. He really enjoyed it. I ordered the rack of lamb, which was quite good. Both plates had very generous servings. We didn't have desert. When in San Diego, we will definitely be back.

Great little place for brunch! We all got the French toast and we all loved it. The three of us also split a bottle of champagne and got orange and pineapple juice to make our own mimosas at the table. It was all delicious and their outside dining area is cute and cozy with comfortable chairs. I didn't take any pastries home, but next time I will!

We loved our wedding cake! Trang was so easy to work with and our cake turned out exactly like the photo I sent. The cake tasted AMAZING! We went with something small and simple but Trang made it look beautiful and our cake still stood out. It was exactly what we wanted. I highly recommend!

What we ordered: Spinach & Cheese Croissant What thought: We picked up one of these at Hillcrest Farmers Market and recommend that you heat it up before eating! We didn't do this and felt it was just alright. Has a good flake to it though! What we rated it: 3/5

I ate half my raspberry mousse cake and threw it away. It was dry and where's the mousse? Instead it had a too sweet frosting-like consistency with no representation of chocolate except for the shell. I opted to eat one of my own homemade chocolate chip cookies instead. Maybe I should take on baking cakes! I should have skipped this joint but my go to bakery in La Jolla was closed. The rest of the offerings looked stale, and there was only one sit-down parton at 2PM.

Great Escargot! Salads were great. I wish I had ordered the flat iron steak, my friend's was great. If you are going to go make sure to order something you wouldn't make at home. The chicken was so so. I should have gone with duck. We weren't told the specials, heard them told to the table next to us and I would have gone with one of those as well but we had already put our order in. But got to cut restaurant slack now you know they're running on lower staff and great chef turnover. But it was nice to be in somewhere that seemed pretty busy at least.

I feel like this could be a five star breakfast. I love the bacon. And the potatoes. And that it's close to my laundromat. First time I went, my over medium eggs had lots of runny white. Loved the bacon and potatoes and bread so much, tried again a few weeks later. Second time, they were nice enough to let me order a half order of French toast for my Kiddo.

The waitress "remembered" my order, instead of tapping it into the device. She asked if I wanted to substitute the potatoes. (I love the potatoes!) So I said no. Order comes out 25 minutes later with fruit instead of potatoes. I didn't have time to send them back (my laundry was waiting and my kid was done waiting). Eggs were perfect. I'm going to give it a third try, because it definitely has perfection potential. Also, I get to hear euro tourists ask if they can get enchiladas for breakfast. (True story.)

One of the best bakeries you'll find in San Diego. One thing I'll say is the location is not the easiest to get to, but one you are there, it is well worth the trip. The strawberry bagatelle and the pralinsko are amazing! The strawberry bagatelle has whole strawberries in it and the cake is amazingly moist. The pralinsko is rich and chocolatey without being overly rich like extraordinary desserts.

The customer service is great. I had an issue with a cake order once on my wife's birthday, which was disappointing, but they did the right thing and apologized and made it right. I greatly appreciate that.

Had a lovely Happy Hour meal here. We ordered mussels, french onion soup, beet salad with frizee (more frizee than beet, though), and a lovely glass of red wine. Warm bread with butter was complimentary. All tasty very tasty. Service was attentive. Note: "Five Star points are not redeemable in the restaurant, only the bakery." I didn't really see this substantiated on the Five Star app, but didn't have that with me at the time to question what staff told me. Also, as I've reported previously, the twice baked chocolate almond croissants are heavenly, the best on the planet, in my opinion.

Had brunch here. Ambience is solid, cute and French but not overly so. Croissant breakfast sandwich was tasty. Cheese plate was good but not great. Mint berry smash cocktail was pretty bad, way too strong. Overall just a shade underwhelming.

Ordered a pork belly eggs benedict, a french omelette and a salmon dijonnaise for brunch. Omelette was advertised as 'barely set' but came out very set; the hollandaise was excessively buttery and congealed within a few minutes. Salmon was not bad but not memorable. Service was decent.

I love this spot! I've been here a few times with friends and my dinner experience a few weeks ago was amazing! My friend and I started with the mussels which was a recommendation from another guest. They were amazing! We chose two bottles of cabernet that were delicious. I got the chicken marsala as my main dish and my friend got the chicken piccata. We both liked our dishes! Also from the host to the servers, great customer service all around!

This is for the bakery. Got the napolitan, chocolate cake, twice baked almond croissant and Mexican chocolate mocha. WAY too much sugar in the almond croissant (and Mexican chocolate mocha) to the point which i felt over sugared after eating just quarter of them. Oh and one of the workers had her mask only covering her mouth. Common, we've been in a pandemic for over a year and it's not hard to wear a mask! Not recommended for these items but the napolitan was great!

OMG! I tried the twice baked chocolate croissant and it was probably the best croissant I've ever had! They take the day old ones, slice them in half, spread almond butter on them, re-bake them, and dust them w/ powder sugar. So good! The cheese danish was also delicious. Thanks for the yummy food, you are great at your craft/trade!

I've been here for regular and SDRW. Amazing as always. It's small and comfortable. I like the servers and the atmosphere. Their menu is great. Honestly, when someone asks me where to go for French food, I always recommend this place. I am not quite sure about authenticity but I'd like to think it's similar to what I'd get in France. Highly recommended

My husband loves cheesecake so for our wedding I thought a cheesecake wedding cake would be perfect. I had one once before at a wedding and thought it was a nice change. When I started the search for a baker I was surprised with how many did not offer that, or didn't want to try. The French Gourmet was the only baker I found that said they could make me what I wanted and Trang did a fantastic job at helping me to get exactly that.

We had a beautiful and delicious 3 tiered traditional cheesecake with vanilla cake and raspberry puree. Thank you Trang for your responses to my countless emails, arranging the samples, and customizing our wedding cake. I had multiple guests ask where we got the cake from and how it was the best cake they ever had : Thank you bakers at French Gourmet!

Outdoor seating area is lovely for the usually sublime SD weather. The baked eggs provencal and Benedict were good, as were the bottomless mimosas. Wait staff was very friendly and attentive. Will certainly return to sample the pastries.

My husband and I ordered our wedding cake here and were in love! The flavors are absolutely amazing. We ordered a tier of strawberry bagatelle and one of succes praline. They were delicious! We definitely will be coming back here for our anniversary to have another piece of cake. Honestly, we'll probably be coming back sooner than that to try some croissants that's looked divine!

Delicious bakery options and friendly staff! Visited this bakery during a vacation to San Diego. It was within walking distance from our Airbnb which made it perfect for breakfast stops. I can vouch for the breakfast croissant, spinach quiche (pictured), broccoli quiche and chocolate croissant. All were very delicious. Croissants were flaky and buttery. Quiches were perfectly cooked and cheesy! Highly recommend stopping by!

I was charged 17$ for a classic Cobb salad *to go* with nothing French about it. The cashier, nicely and politely confirmed the price, quite shocking. Tu n'as pas honte Michel? 17 balles pour une salade merdique prete emporter? Soit une salade qui a de la gueule pour 17 (et encore.) ou alors 10 balles grand max! Et ne parlons pas de la baguette "Francaise".

After my family and I finished eating a very delicious pizza lunch next door at Ambrogio15, my hubby went inside the French Gourmet and picked up desserts--chocolate croissant, double-baked almond filled croissant, a huge peanut butter cookie, a large macaron, a few crepe brules, a couple of beignets, and a few unidentified little sweet treats. My favorite is the chocolate croissant, of course! I would have loved it even more if I ate it with a cup of hot coffee.

Very intimate setting. The ambiance was very nice and well done. The food wasn't overly priced and felt as though you got what you paid for. Nothing more, nothing less. Good food at a good price for a night out. Nothing exceptional but was very much worth it. The staff was VERY friendly. I was impressed with the attention received from walking in the door to the genuine goodbyes.

We got stuffed on bread and dinner so I'm a loser who didn't get a dessert at a place known for its pastries but I will certainly be back. They are worth repeated business.

I wish I could give this place more stars! The french toast, the brown sugar glazed bacon, the escargot, the payson salad! Let's start with the French Gourmet Toast. 4 thick boy slices of french toast, perfectly cooked with blackberries, raspberries and strawberries! Omg, so good. The brown sugar glazed bacon.once they bring it to the table let it sit.

The glaze will harden a little and give the bacon a slight snap to it. De-licious! The perfect contrast of sweet and salty! The escargot was a little slice of french cuisine executed perfectly in San Diego. Very hard to find good escargot in San Diego. Payson salad was perfectly light, the greens were crunchy and just the right out of vinaigrette.

We accidently popped in here after our first choice was 40 mins wait to be seated for brunch. After this visit, I'll never want to go to the other place. This place just earned my top spot for brunch. The seating area is outside under partially shaded canopies and they have heaters. It's in between two building, there is a mural painted on the side our their building to make it feel less like a space between two buildings.

They have done a good job. When you come here, expect to be greeted by their friendly staff, who have smiles on (you can hear the smiles they wear!) and be ready to eat with a smile, because the food is delicious.

This is a limited review from a past visit to this well-known bakery and restaurant in town. I had arrived hoping to indulge in a late meal, but unfortunately the staff had a private function that evening so the dining room had already been closed. Even getting some dinner food to-go was not feasible because the kitchen had shut down by 8:15 pm. I was able to purchase a couple of quiches (spinach, ham and cheese), a loaf of pumpkin bread, and a loaf of blueberry bread to take home as future breakfast items.

The quiches came in small pot pie tins and were priced at $6 each. They tasted fine, but I think they were pricey for their size. The two breads were moist and flavorful and sold for $4 each which wasn't too bad. At least the staff honored the 20% coupon card on my order even though the discount was intended for a sit-down meal. I will return during a future San Diego Restaurant Week in which The French Gourmet has been a fixture on that scene with a generous fixed price for a three-course meal.

I tried this place on a Friday at about 10AM. There were 3 other groups in the restaurant, casually dressed. The interior is casual nice with crystal clean glasses and upscale plateware. I ordered their egg and bacon breakfast, soft scramble, crispy bacon and garlic parsley potatoes. It came out in about 5-minutes, steaming hot and everything was seasoned and cooked to perfection.

Very rarely have I had house potatoes cooked perfectly, slightly crispy outside and soft inside. Most of the servers were Hispanic, which is simply an observation, as I naively expect French servers at a French restaurant. My servers were polite, attentive, polished in their dress and mannerisms. I also had the strawberry bagatelle which served partially frozen.

As I relaxed in my booth, sipping my coffee enjoying the relaxed atmosphere, the desert softened and was pure decadence. My only complaints are that parking can be a little challenging and a table was being meticulously cleaned close to me, causing me to catch a whiff of the cleaning solution. My only warning is to exercise self-control when passing by their pastry display.
