The story of Rockwood Manor, our historic inn, begins with Francis Bell. Francis was an adept cattle trader and, as such, traveled the Valleys of Virginia bringing cattle back to his home farm in Swoope, Augusta County, VA, which he ran with his brother Samuel Hays Bell. In his travels to the New River Valley he met and learned from master trader James Randal Kent who was married to Mary Cloyd and lived at Buchanan's Bottom (now known as Kentland and owned by Virginia Tech).J.R. Kent was the wealthiest man in Montgomery County.
A grand and spacious room that includes a bay window and an entrance to the solarium. The king-size bed faces the working gas fireplace while the turret-like area provides comfortable seating. The private bath has a walk-in shower with two shower heads, and is wheelchair friendly.
This room sports antique twin brass beds and is the sunniest of all the rooms in the house. The fireplace and southern exposure keep the room rocking-chair cozy. This green and yellow bordered room with its white quilted beds exudes a feeling of youth. A shared bath is located in the hallway and robes are provided.
With a shower of natural lighting, this spacious and centrally located bay-windowed suite is designed for the bride-to-be. The lucky lady can make last-minute checks of her gown in the Chervil mirror before presenting herself on the gracefully curving staircase. One can relax and enjoy the impressive Jacuzzi tub in the private bath.

If you want rest and relaxation in a slow paced rural area with natural beauty all around you must visit Rockwood Manor. It is beautifully restored as a 1800's plantation. The owner, Frank, his wife, and all the staff are so friendly and breakfast is AMAZING! The land is so picturesque, your pictures will look like you hired a professional!

I loved the house and Frank had so much to share about its history. The breakfast was splendid, I especially loved the banana chocolate bread. Perfect get-away for all those who enjoy history and mountainous scenery!

Entering the long driveway is just a taste of the escape Rockwood Manor provides. Wide open spaces protected from the outside world by trees and sloping hills it leads to a historic house that is beautifully preserved. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, Frank and Rochelle were down to earth and heartwarming, the staff was the same way and breakfast was amazing! Great accommodations for a memorable experience. I'm so glad we found the slice of heaven as we toured the East coast for colleges!

If you get a chance the Bell room on the first floor is wonderful. Has a full bedroom, full bath, fireplace, and sitting room with TV! If you like old homes and architecture this place is wonderful! Second time staying here.

I would highly recommend Rockwood Manor, especially if you love beautiful old houses. Our room was lovely, and Frank is an excellent host, even taking the time to talk about his beloved pet. I will definitely be back in the future!

Beautiful home with plenty of history and character! From the rippled glass windows, antique hardwood floors, grand staircases, to the amazingly wide door frames, this place is perfectly restored without losing its original charm! A big thanks to this family for saving their ancestral home from being sold off and then renovating it so it could be shared with the rest of us! Loved staying in the Porterfield Suite for our Halloween Anniversary.

It was spacious, clean, and cozy. The King size bed was very comfy! The innkeeper Frank was friendly and available for anything we needed. So sad to be checking out in a few hours but we will be back again!

Frank and Rachelle were the nicest inn people we have ever met. Larry and I have been going to inns for 40 years and can honestly rate this as the best! Gorgeous rooms, great food, lovely atmosphere. We will recommend Rockwood Manor to everyone and will most definitely return again!

Our son started at Radford University this weekend and we were looking for a place to stay. All local hotels were price gouging with rates triple the norm. I looked into a Bed and Breakfast and found the Rockwood Manor. The price was what you would expect with no price gouging whatsoever. It turned out to be a very happy turn of events. Rockwood Manor is about a 15 minute drive from Radford university and was perfect for our needs.

The Manor is on the historic register. A bit rustic on in places, it was last renovated in 2005. It is a beautiful place and our Hosts Frank and Rochelle were warm, friendly and very welcoming. We stayed in the Blakemore room. It had lots of windows which provided a nice view of the property. Our room also had a jacuzzi which we used and it was amazing after a long day on the road.

The bed was a bit more firm than what we are used to at home and we recommended a mattress topper but by no means is this a negative as it is a personal preference. The linens were nice and clean and smelled fresh. We walked around the property and they looked to be all set up for wedding events. Lots of space, lots of areas for photo ops. It would be an ideal place for a wedding with room for a reception.

The inside while at one point was the family home was like walking through history. We loved it. My favorite thing about the place was that I felt at home. Frank and and Rochelle are wonderful hosts. The breakfast the next morning was great with options for everyone. They also set the food up buffet style which made me feel like I was at a big family breakfast : The only suggestion I would have is for our hosts to look into some professional rug cleaning.

There were a couple of stains in the rug under the table in our room would need professional stain removal to get out. This place is one of the best B&Bs my wife and I have ever visited. We loved it!

I stayed at Rockwood Manor with a group of friends, and we could not have been more pleased! We stayed in the main house, and it was breathtaking! Frank and his wife are such welcoming innkeepers and made us feel right at home. The house is so large with so many common areas. It was wonderful to come back after a VT football game and be able to relax in the parlor and have a place to snack and visit with my friends.

The grounds are beautiful, and the view from my bedroom was amazing. An added bonus were the wonderful breakfasts each morning. I highly recommend Rockwood Manor. You won't be disappointed!

I can't seem to find the words that describe my stay at Rockwood Manor. To begin with, my first view of this beautiful home took my breath away! The elegance of the home and the beautiful grounds are like something out of a movie. We were greeted by the owners Sarah, Frank and Rochelle. They are so kind and friendly and treated us like family.

The rooms are amazing and comfortable. There are many, many details that are original to this lovely old home. The food was so good and served hot and fresh. Our group rented the entire house and it was a great place for our 2019 family reunion. We will definitely return and are already looking forward to it. This short vacation at Rockwood Manor was one of the best experiences I have had while traveling. Thank you Rockwood. Wish i was still there.

We went here for a friend's wedding reception, which was held at the barn at the bottom of the property. The house was very nice, beds and pillows were very comfortable, sheets were soft. I thought I would be cold, because we went in early winter, but there was a blanket and a comforter on the bed, so we snuggled up nicely under them. The barn for the te reception was really cool and rustic, a beautiful place for a celebration (though I wish it was warmer!).

We only stayed one night, as we had a long drive back home the next day. Breakfast was at 9, and we'd hoped to have left earlier, but I am glad we stayed to eat. It was homemade food right there in their kitchen, and it was delicious. Not just your basic boring stuff. They made casserole, and hot cinnamon apples, homemade bread, and fresh fruit. Much better than stopping at a fast food place for a sandwich! If you are looking for a nice bed and breakfast to stay in, I recommend this one!

I was fortunate to spend a night at Rockwood Manor. I wish I could have stayed longer. The Manor is beautiful and well appointed, the grounds are lovely and expansive. Mrs. Drummond's exquisite taste is evident everywhere you look. I had a wonderful breakfast including fruit from the farm, everything was fresh and flavorful. My room and en suite were gorgeous and comfortable with all the comforts of home, and the extra touches of Sarah.

It was my privilege to spend a few hours with Sarah in the evening learning about the history of the house and getting to know Sarah. I enjoyed an interesting and delightful evening that I will always remember fondly. If you have an opportunity to stay at Rockwood Manor, I recommend that you don't hesitate, it's a beautiful experience.

I came for a cousin's wedding in late September. The main house is well-maintained with beautiful carved wood, original floors, tall ceilings, and really charming detailing that you would expect from a historic home. Family members who stayed in the main house told me that although you can hear everything going on in the house, the noise is not a problem at night when everyone is asleep.

I made the mistake of staying and putting my parents up in the converted calf barn. It is difficult to get to at night, especially because there is no lighting between the barn and the main house. The barn, while renovated, is not nearly as comfortable as the main house. Fixtures feel cheap, ugly carpeting and furniture populate the room--do not stay in the barn (called The Chardonnay and Merlot rooms).

My last comment covers the grounds of the property. There are beautiful trees and flowers on the property along with a pond full of goldfish. It looks beautiful but the ground is uneven (hard to walk on especially at night), was covered by fallen leaves and nuts. In short, it could be a lot better maintained. Overall, Rockwood Manor provides decent accommodations. You will not be disappointed if you stay in the main house!

My wife and I rented the whole house for a full weekend for our wedding in July of 2009. It was absolutely beautiful! The owners of the house were always helpful and it was spotless! Everyone who stayed at the house couldn't stop talking about how beautiful and comfortable it was! Not a bad price either at $1,700 for such a beautiful house! They also have a really neat barn on their property that is huge and can be used for parties. We used it for our rehearsal dinner and got married on the front porch steps. Can't recommend it enough!

My husband and I came from Tampa, FL for a VT game. We absolutely loved Rockwood Manor. The house is incredible. There is beauty, history, and charm everywhere! Frank made us feel right at home. There is also an adorable dog named Chardonnay and she was a gracious host! We stayed in the Porterfield room and loved it! Every room in the house is unique with character.

The property is so pretty with fields, barns, a small vineyard, and wildlife to see! Frank made us a delicious breakfast and we chatted with another couple staying here as well who also had a wonderful stay. I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone I know! It was a perfect weekend!

We had our wedding here last weekend and couldn't be happier with how it turned out. Frank and his family were wonderful and treated us like family. The venue is beautiful and a great value for a wedding. All of our guests kept complimenting our choice of venue. The rooms are great, the beds are incredibly comfortable, and the setting is beautiful. We highly recommend Rockwood.

This B&B is gorgeous. Every room has its own personality and the furnishings and decor reflect the excellent taste of interior designer/co-owner Sarah Drummond. We had a family reunion here for three days and nights and all fell in love with the innkeepers, the manor, and the rural surroundings. Most important comfort-wise is the AC, which cools perfectly.

The manor, built in 1875 in the Italianate style and loaded with beautiful details like 16 plaster crown molding and striped walnut and ash flooring, was totally renovated in 2005 and is so luxurious with all of the modern comforts, including wireless Internet. Breakfast is gourmet quality and Frank Drummond is an excellent and fearless cook, cooking seasonal and regional variations to suit his whimsy on a particular day.

No cold cereal on this menu. We recently visited the Poconos in PA and a comparable B&B would easily cost five or six times more than we paid here. Weddings are a big business, but the overnight traveler is welcome, too. 12 guest rooms will accommodate a large crowd. Highly recommended.
